What It Is

The Solution for Anyone Who Can't Use the Stairs

A vertical platform lift (VPL) is a powered platform that raises and lowers straight up and down. It bypasses steps entirely, making it the right solution for wheelchair users, scooter riders, and anyone who cannot safely navigate a staircase at all.

Western Stairlifts installs the Atlas Mini VISTA and the Harmar Highlander II, covering everything from compact single-step porch entries to elevated deck transitions requiring several feet of vertical travel.

Built for indoor and outdoor use, our VPLs feature stable platforms, fold-down ramps, locking safety gates, and simple push-button controls accessible from both the ground level and the upper level.

  • Full wheelchair and power scooter compatibility
  • Outdoor-rated for year-round exposure
  • Fold-down ramp and locking safety gate on every model
  • Battery backup keeps the lift running during outages

Is It Right For You?

A VPL Lifts Where a Ramp or Stairlift Cannot

If you use a wheelchair or scooter and have steps blocking your entry, a vertical platform lift is the direct solution. If you need access across multiple full floors of your home, a residential elevator may be a better fit.

Wheelchair and Scooter Users

A VPL is purpose-built for mobility devices. The platform is sized to fit wheelchairs, power scooters, and powerchairs without transferring out of the device.

Elevated Porch, Deck, or Entry

Any raised entry with steps blocking wheelchair access is an ideal candidate. VPLs work on exterior porches, interior step-ups, garages, and deck transitions.

Indoor Floor-Level Transitions

Short indoor rises between split-level floors or sunken living areas can be resolved with a compact indoor VPL where a ramp is not practical.

Access Across Multiple Full Floors

For travel between multiple floors of a home, a residential elevator provides more capacity and range. We will confirm the right fit during your evaluation.

The Process

From Evaluation to Your First Lift

01

Free In-Home Evaluation

A trained technician visits your home and assesses the entry, deck, or floor transition that needs lift access. We measure the rise height, available footprint, and surface conditions to recommend the right VPL model.

02

Model Selection and Scheduling

We confirm the right Atlas or Harmar model for your rise height, weight requirements, and environment. Installation is typically scheduled within days of your evaluation, not weeks.

03

Professional Installation

Our factory-trained team arrives with everything needed and completes the full installation in a single day in most cases. The lift anchors to the existing surface with no major structural modifications required.

04

Full Walkthrough

Before we leave, your technician walks through every function: upper and lower controls, fold-down ramp, safety gate, obstruction sensors, and battery backup. We stay until you feel completely confident using it.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a vertical platform lift cost?
VPL pricing depends on the model, rise height, and whether the installation is indoor or outdoor. Because each installation is assessed on-site, pricing is confirmed after our free in-home evaluation. We give you a firm quote with no pressure and no obligation.
How long does installation take?
Most vertical platform lift installations are completed in a single day. Our team arrives with all required hardware, completes the installation, and walks you through full operation before leaving.
Can a VPL be used outdoors in rain or snow?
Yes. The Atlas Mini VISTA and Harmar Highlander II are both rated for outdoor use and designed to withstand rain, snow, and temperature variation. The motors and drive systems are sealed for exterior environments.
What is the weight capacity?
The Atlas Mini VISTA supports up to 750 lbs. The Harmar Highlander II also handles heavy-duty loads. Both models easily accommodate power wheelchairs, scooters, and the rider together.
Does insurance or Medicare cover it?
Standard Medicare Part B does not cover vertical platform lifts as durable medical equipment in a home setting. Some VA programs and Medicaid waivers may offer assistance depending on your state. Our team can point you toward available resources during your evaluation.
What if I lose power?
All models include battery backup. The lift continues operating through power outages so you are never stranded at the top or bottom of your entry.
